The Beginning of a New Era
In 2000, the organisation was officially formed, building on WDK’s strong foundation of 15 ICED conferences, numerous publications, and international workshops. The Design Society inherited WDK’s activities and responsibilities, including the continuation of the ICED conference series, marking a new chapter in the advancement of engineering design research and collaboration worldwide.

Foundations & Community
The origins of the Design Society trace back to the WDK, an international community founded around a shared interest in engineering design. WDK established the International Conference on Engineering Design (ICED) series, beginning with the first conference in Rome in 1981, through the initiative of Umberto Pighini. Over the years, WDK has helped shape the global engineering design community through conferences, workshops, and publications.
